Cris Cola interview

During Cris Cola’s senior year of high school, he came up with his artist name (Cris Cola). Cola is his mom’s nickname, so he combined his birth name Christopher with it. His mother didn’t think he should rap. At the time, they were dealing with the typical teen drama between mom and son. Around then, he had been kicked out for whatever reason, so he put her name on the music to ensure that she was involved from the start.

Music has always been a passion of Cris Cola since he was a young child. As a child, he used to dance with toy guitars and watch BET and MTV videos all the time. As the son of a musician, the love for the craft runs through his veins. When he was a kid, he remembers that he wanted to go to the Grammys.

When he was a kid, Bow Wow was a major influence. When he was 8 or 9, he wrote his first rhyme. The song that Bow Wow was talking about basketball was the one he revised. His lyrics were incorporated into some of the song. So he’d start with Bow, then switch to his lyrics on the second bar. That composite paper is still in his possession. Around the age of 14-15, he started to truly write.

As a 16-year-old, he started recording. At the time, he didn’t have any beats, so he would simply write songs to old Jay Z, DMX, and Nas beats on YouTube. Around this time, he realized he has what it takes to become a great person one day.

His style of music is attributed to the true lyricists. The artists I loved growing up included Ludacris, DMX, Jay Z, Missy Elliot, etc. He’s also influenced by those music video eras before YouTube and streaming services.
