Milwaukee Bucks’ Damian Lillard has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in his right calf, forcing the 34-year-old point guard to step away from basketball indefinitely. The shocking news was confirmed by the Bucks organization on Tuesday, with the team announcing that Lillard has already begun treatment with blood thinners to manage the condition.
The diagnosis is a significant setback for the seven-time NBA All-Star, who has been a key player for Milwaukee since joining the team in late 2023. While the full timeline for his recovery remains uncertain, medical experts and team officials will monitor his condition closely in the coming weeks.

Lillard broke his silence after the announcement, sharing his thoughts through NBA insider Chris Haynes.
“It’s unfortunate that something outside of my control has come up,” Lillard said. “Along with the Bucks’ medical staff, our priority is my health and safety. As much as I love basketball, my first responsibility is to be here for my kids and my family.”
Despite the frustration of being sidelined, Lillard expressed gratitude toward the Bucks organization for acting swiftly and ensuring he received the necessary medical attention.
“I’m grateful the Bucks acted quickly on this,” he added. “They have been incredibly supportive throughout the process. I look forward to getting past this and returning to the game.”
Milwaukee Bucks general manager Jon Horst also released a statement emphasizing that Lillard’s well-being is the top priority for the franchise.
“We will support him as he moves through this weekly process with strict criteria to ensure that it is safe for him to return to play,” Horst said. “Doctors have indicated that this situation is highly unlikely to happen again, and we are thankful it was identified and treated early.”
