The History of Black People in Competitive Sports and The Continuation of “Black Firsts” In 2023

Sports Illustrated began coverage of the Howard University swim and dive team in October 2022. Under the leadership of Coach Nicholas Askew during his eighth season, they have been dominating in the water and in the media.

In an all new “REVOLT Black News Weekly,” we explore the historical context of sports and famous athletes like Jesse Owens to Althea Gibson — who had to play tennis on courts at night due to the racial segregation — to golf legend Anne Gordon, who became the first Black woman to reach the PGA, and many more.

Inspired by Sean “Diddy” Combs’ successful “State Of Emergency: The State of Black America & Coronavirus” town hall, “REVOLT BLACK NEWS” is a platform that is designed to report news from the perspective of Black people for Black people.

“When I started REVOLT, I always wanted to develop a platform to report the news from our perspective, from our lens, from our people, so I decided to launch ’REVOLT BLACK NEWS,’” said Combs. “We’re here with solutions. We’ve already heard about what we can’t do, but this is what we can do.”
