Twitter reacts to a black conservative saying slave owners deserve reparations

Despite its relatively expensive nature, Larry Elder said slave owners are also entitled to reparations because their “property” was seized following the Civil War. On July 18, he made the comments as a guest on Candace Owens’ “The Candace Owens Show.” He is hoping to become the next governor of California.

“Are you aware that slave owner compensation was given?” According to Elder, slave owners were compensated by the government after losing their ‘property.’

“So, are people really interested in that debate when they talk about reparations? Slavery was legal, regardless of how people felt about it. As property that had been legally owned by them was taken after the Civil War, one might argue that reparations should not only be paid out to Blacks but also to people who had their quota rights taken away after the Civil War,” he explained.

As Owens said, the United States was among the first nations to ban the slave trade. The two conservative hosts then discussed the issue of reparations. Denmark, however, was the first country to ban enslaved people from entering its territory in 1803, followed by Britain in 1807 and the U.S. in 1808. Aside from the United States, only the Cuban and Brazilian countries abolitionized slavery after the United States.

Moreover, Elder stated that it is the British government that compensated former slave owners with “substantial amounts of money,” in order to prevent a civil war as it did in the S.U. The British government awarded former slave owners £20 million in compensation after abolishing slavery in the British Empire.

As part of the District Compensated Emancipation Law of the District of Columbia adopted by then-President Abraham Lincoln in 1862, former Colombian slave owners in Washington, D.C. received about $300 for each slave after being unfreed.

On Tuesday (Sept. 7), users resurfaced Elder and Owens’s discussion on the social network. “Larry Elder believes that slave owners deserve reparations since their ‘property’ was taken when slavery ended. One person tweeted: “If you don’t see the problem there, then you are seriously deranged.”
