Judge’s Verdict: ASAP Rocky to Face Trial for Two Felony Charges

Renowned rap artist ASAP Rocky, real name Rakim Athelaston Mayers, is set to stand trial for two felony counts of assault, as per the ruling by Los Angeles Judge Mary Lou Villar de Longoria. The charges stem from an alleged shooting incident involving Terell Ephron, professionally known as ASAP Relli, which took place in 2021.

The Announcement of the Court Decision

“There’s probable cause for rapper A$AP Rocky…to support two counts of first-degree assault with a firearm.”

Veteran court reporter Meghann Cuniff shared this statement at the end of Monday’s proceedings. This news of ASAP Rocky standing trial was a significant development in the case, echoing throughout the music industry. ASAP Rocky’s arraignment is scheduled for Jan. 8, 2023.

Statements from Rocky’s Defense Team

Joe Tacopina, Rocky’s attorney, expressed his confidence outside the court, stating, “There will be some evidence that is going to be insurmountable. The witness is not going to be able to withstand cross-examination in front of the jury.” Tacopina added that he’s “certain Rocky is going to be vindicated when all is said and done.”

Evidence Presented in Court

During the Monday session, new evidence was shared, including a video featuring the sounds of “two loud pops” that coincide with the alleged shooting’s timestamp. Moments after these sounds, ASAP Rocky is seen walking away from the altercation scene.

LAPD detective Frank Flores testified that another video from a different parking garage showed a gun in Rocky’s hands. However, Flores admitted that the video capturing the shooting isn’t definitive, stating, “There’s nothing clear that shows it.”

The Alleged Incident’s Details

The incident allegedly occurred on Nov. 6, 2021. Relli asserts that Rocky called him, demanding his location before meeting him at a Los Angeles hotel. According to Relli, Rocky confronted him alongside a crew of men, which led to Rocky allegedly pointing a gun at Relli’s stomach and threatening to kill him. Relli alleges that Rocky then shot him four times before fleeing.

Rocky’s Plea

In August 2022, Rocky pleaded not guilty to two counts of assault with a firearm. His legal team stated, “The injuries and/or damages complained of in the complaint, if any, were caused solely, directly and proximately by the negligent and/or intentional acts or omissions of persons other than answering defendant.”

ASAP Rocky’s defense team continues to maintain his innocence, and the music industry, along with his fans, eagerly await the outcome of the impending trial.

Looking Ahead

As the legal proceedings unfold, the music industry and fans worldwide are waiting with bated breath for the final verdict. Despite the serious allegations, many continue to support ASAP Rocky, hoping for his vindication.

The trial’s results could have significant implications, not just for ASAP Rocky’s career but also for the broader music industry. The case is a potent reminder of the challenges that artists can face, and the importance of maintaining a positive public image in the public eye.
