It’s official now, Jorja Smith has released her first release of 2018 known as “Try Me“, which can be purchased via her independent label, FAMM, today (April 14). As an accompaniment to the record, a stunning video was shot around the suburban areas of Marseille, France by Amber Grace Johnson and directed by her. In addition to being produced by the duo DAMEDAME*, the new track is also backed by an instrumental with a heavy drumbeat that serves as the perfect background to the vibrant lyrics that the songstress is crooning through her singing:
“The dancer involved in the visual, Andrea Bou Othmane, portrays a bull that embodies the world and its opinions beyond my control that are beyond the control of myself,” Jorja Smith talked about the symbolism in the visual via a press release.
Towards the end of last year, the 25-year-old singer released a 12-song mixtape titled Lost & Found that included breakout singles such as “Teenage Fantasy” and “Blue Lights.” Two years later, she released Be Right Back with a one-off assist from Shaybo and production by Grammy-nominated hitmaker Guilty Beatz, on which she included a sole feature by Shaybo. “Be Right Back provides exactly what I was seeking. I am extremely pleased with its services. There was a small waiting room, and everyone knew that I would be back soon,” she said in a statement at the time.
In addition to her own releases, Jorja Smith has also made many appearances on other artists’ releases, such as “Mama” by Ludwig Göransson, “Patience” with Wesley Joseph, “Darjeeling” with FKA Twigs, and “Nobody But You” with Sonder. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever included a selection of these songs on its soundtrack.
