George Floyd was killed on May 25, 2020, after a police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes during an arrest. Tyre Nichols died on June 3, 2020, after being shot by a police officer in Austin, Texas. He was unarmed at the time of the shooting. Both death’s sparked international outrage and protests against racial injustice and police brutality.
George Floyd’s family will be in attendance at Tyre King’s funeral today. They have shown great support for the young man, and hope that his death will bring about change. The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with funeral costs, and have also been vocal in the media about the need for justice. Change cannot come without support from those who are directly affected by police brutality, and the Floyd family is certainly doing their part.
Members of the community held signs and wore T-shirts with messages of love and support for the young victim’s family. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner spoke at the event, calling for an end to gun violence. “This senseless act of violence has to stop,” he said.
It is incredibly heartwarming and encouraging to see the members of George Floyd’s family show their support for Tyre Nichols in this difficult time.
